It’s a great time for math at Rocky Run Elementary! It’s also a perfect time for math at home! There are many different mathematical activities that you can do with your child this time of year!
  • Take them holiday shopping. Have your child find the best deals and compare prices.
  • Have your child help you cook in the kitchen. Counting out cups of sugar, flour, and milk are great ways to work on those measuring skills!
  • Ask math questions in the car on the way to Grandma’s. For the younger student, look for geometric shapes out the window. For the older ones, ask how many more miles you can go before you have to stop for gas.
  • Let your child help put new toys together and hang up decorations. These activities are a great way to develop problem solving and spatial reasoning skills.
  • Call out basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts while waiting in line.
  • Work on a time schedule together to plan your holiday events.
  • Let them “teach” you what they learned in school that day.
  • Let them know how much you enjoy math and you enjoy learning about math!

Below, I have also included some board games you may like to play at home. Playing board games and card games is a great way to develop reasoning ability and practice mathematical skills. I encourage you to incorporate these and other math games into your Family Nights. Family math nights are a fun and powerful way to support your learners at home and create a chance for your child to explain his or her thinking to you.

Math-a-Thon!!
Math-a-Thon is not only a great opportunity to practice math skills but it allows you to help kids who are very sick at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.  The money donated will go towards research and treatments.  If you have not done so, please fill in your permission slip and send it into school.  This is a great opportunity to help others less fortunate.
First In Math!
First In Math® is back!  It is an educational website that gets young people excited about math. This year the county  purchased the rights for children in 1st through 5th grade to access this on-line website. The children have been busy playing specially-designed "games" that help to develop and reinforce basic math concepts.  Each child has received his or her own, personal User ID and Password so they can now play the games 24/7 at school or at home.
